From April 2024, the WHS (World Handicap System) has introduced changes to the way your Course Handicap and Playing Handicap are calculated:

  • Your Course Handicap is no longer rounded to a whole number before applying any competition allowance.
  • Instead, you apply the competition allowance to the exact Course Handicap, and only then round to the nearest whole number to find your Playing Handicap.

Suppose:

  • Handicap Index: 14.2
  • Slope Rating of the course: 128
  • Course Rating: 72.2
  • Par for the course: 70
  • Competition Allowance: 95% (Stroke Play)

Step 1: Calculate Course Handicap (no rounding)

Use the updated formula:

Course Handicap = (Handicap Index × (Slope Rating ÷ 113)) + (Course Rating - Par)

Substituting the values:

Course Handicap = (14.2 × (128 ÷ 113)) + (72.2 - 70)
= (14.2 × 1.132743) + 2.2
= 16.06 + 2.2
= 18.26 (do not round)

Step 2: Apply the Competition Allowance

Multiply the exact Course Handicap by the competition allowance:

18.26 × 0.95 = 17.347

Step 3: Round the Playing Handicap

Round 17.347 to the nearest whole number:

17 Playing Handicap

Result: The player will receive 17 strokes for the competition.

Important: Members should not worry too much about the details of these calculations. Your Handicap Index, Course Handicap, and Playing Handicap will normally be shown automatically on the competition start sheets, on HowDidIDo, or via the Club's systems. Focus on enjoying your golf — the system is designed to be fair in the background so you can just go out, have fun, and play your best!

Tip: If you would like to check your Playing Handicap for different formats, such as Singles Strokeplay, Singles Matchplay, or Pairs Matchplay, you can use the Handicap Calculator tab at the top of this page!

Playing Handicap

Standard format using your Handicap Index (HI), Slope Rating (SR), and Course Rating (CR) to calculate your Course Handicap (CH) and Playing Handicap (PH).

Singles Matchplay

Calculates strokes received (SR) for a head-to-head match using 100% of the CH, adjusted relative to the lowest CH.

Pairs Matchplay

SP – Standard Par | SR – Slope Rating
CR – Course Rating | HA – Handicap Allowance (%)
HI – Handicap Index | CH – Course Handicap
PH – Playing Handicap | SR – Strokes Received
